Client Overview: STEMfinity

STEMfinity is a reseller of STEM / STEAM educational products. They bill themselves as educators’ and parents’ β€œone-stop shop” for STEM learning. They have created a brand with an endearing mascot and aim to make the shopping experience simpler.

The Problem

With slow growth in sales, STEMfinity struggled to differentiate itself on the market. I worked with Schenker Consulting Group to identify these problems:

  • What can STEMfinity offer customers beyond a simple shopping experience?

  • How can STEMfinity compete with direct-to-consumer sales channels?

  • How can STEMfinity capture more repeat customers?

The Solution: 1 + 1 = 3

A series of product β€œMashups” that each combine two of STEMfinity’s best-selling products to unlock a new experience. This allows STEMfinity to create value for customers in a way that a Direct-to-Consumer seller could not.

Project-Based, Real World, and Standards-Aligned Content

Our research process uncovered a need in homes and schools for high quality content that is aligned with NGSS, Common Core, and CSTA Standards. These β€œProject Starter” cards provide a Standards-Aligned framework to make learning applied and engaging. Real World problem-solving empowers students and builds the 21st Century Skills they need to succeed.

Adaptable, Varied, and Appealing Projects

In speaking with customers, the team discovered a desire for materials that could serve a variety of contexts: a STEM-newbie teacher who needs a self-guided activity for the student who β€œalways finished their work early”, a parent who doesn’t have a background in education but wants to develop their child’s STEM skills, and a STEM-confident teacher who wants a novel activity with deep opportunities for the entire class.

Physical Cards for Easy Access and Use

Physical cards were selected for the initial launch because we found that they helped to streamline the process in a form that felt safe and accessible to parents, teachers, and students.

Physical cards also allow STEMfinity to provide targeted coupon codes for future use so that they can better understand their customer’s habits, desires, and needs.
